History

Restaurant Ormisson honors Villem Ormisson—a renowned Estonian painter, art teacher, and member of the Pallas art association. The restaurant’s historic home was built by his father, Andres Ormisson, in 1910.

Widely regarded as one of the most outstanding Estonian colorists, Villem Ormisson was born in Viljandi in 1892 and discovered his true calling in art at an early age. He later moved to Riga to study drawing and painting under the guidance of celebrated Latvian masters Jānis Tilbergs and Vilhelms Purvītis.

In the autumn of 1914, Ormisson returned to Viljandi, where he spent the rest of his life working as an art teacher. Today, he is remembered as one of Estonia’s most prominent artists, celebrated for his unique coloring style and enigmatic details. By carrying his name, Restaurant Ormisson proudly honors the lasting legacy of both the artist and his father.
