The Early Beginnings

Park hotel Viljandi’s history begins with a wooden house built in 1910 by farmer and flax merchant Andres Ormisson. He chose Laidoner Square for its location, a spot which had served as the city’s commercial center for centuries. Ormisson opened a diner on the first floor, whereas the second floor housed an inn and various other businesses.

When a fire tragically destroyed the original house, the forward-thinking Ormisson rebounded quickly. He constructed a grand, three-story brick building in its place, which functioned as a hotel and restaurant. Named the Grand Hotel, it became Viljandi’s most luxurious property, featuring modern amenities such as central heating and running water. Following Andres Ormisson’s death in 1918, his wife Anna took over the business. She welcomed artists, businessmen, and traveling theater troupes to the luxury hotel and restaurant.

From Soviet Occupation to Modern Restoration

The Soviet occupation eventually halted the hotel’s golden years. During the war, the premises were repurposed as a hospital, and later served as educational facilities for a trade school and a medical school. From 1960 until 1997, the building was home to the Cultural Education School—the predecessor of today’s University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.

The extensive restoration of the building began in 2016 and was completed in the summer of 2018, reviving a landmark with a centennial role in Viljandi’s cultural and commercial life. Today, Park Hotel Viljandi stands in the city center alongside historic landmarks like the old water tower, the Viljandi Museum, and the Town Hall. At the heart of the hotel, Restaurant Ormisson honors Andres Ormisson and his son Wilhelm, carrying their family legacy forward into the modern era.
