The Early Beginnings
Park hotel Viljandi’s history begins with a wooden house built in 1910 by farmer and flax merchant Andres Ormisson. He chose Laidoner Square for its location, a spot which had served as the city’s commercial center for centuries. Ormisson opened a diner on the first floor, whereas the second floor housed an inn and various other businesses.
When a fire tragically destroyed the original house, the forward-thinking Ormisson rebounded quickly. He constructed a grand, three-story brick building in its place, which functioned as a hotel and restaurant. Named the Grand Hotel, it became Viljandi’s most luxurious property, featuring modern amenities such as central heating and running water. Following Andres Ormisson’s death in 1918, his wife Anna took over the business. She welcomed artists, businessmen, and traveling theater troupes to the luxury hotel and restaurant.
